John Lennon would have 'voted Reagan'
John Lennon would have voted for the republican Ronald Reagan in the 1980 presidential race if he had been an American citizen, according to a new documentary.
The claim is made by Fred Seaman in the film Beatles Stories. He worked as the musician's personal assistant from 1979 to 1980.
Mr Seaman told Jam Showbiz that Lennon, whose famous piano-led Imagine song is seen as a triumph of liberal ideals, had become embarrassed by his earlier political radicalism.
He said: "He'd met Reagan back in the 70s at some sporting event. Reagan was the guy who ordered soldiers to go after the young peace demonstrators in Berkeley, so I think that John maybe forgot about that.
"He did express support for Reagan, which shocked me."
In the film Seaman gives an example of this shift by saying that Lennon had engaged in "brutal argument my uncle, who was an old-time communist".
Beatles Stories is a documentary directed by the filmmaker Seth Swirsky. It documents his five-year journey to hear great personal stories about fans of The Beatles and their love of the band.
He interviews some of the biggest names in entertainment, including Henry Winkler, otherwise known as the Fonz, the actor Jon Voight and Klaus Voormann to name but a few.
The acclaimed rock and roll director Cameron Crowe described it an "epic and timeless piece of work".
