Joey Barton aims to reunite The Smiths
The former Newcastle United midfielder who is now playing for QPR wants to do his bit to bridge the divide between Morrissey and Johnny Marr.
Barton, who was speaking at the Q Awards, said: "If I could get The Smiths back together that would top anything I could achieve on the football pitch."
The footballer, whose professional career has been marred by scandals on and off the pitch, was booed as he took to the stage to present the Kaiser Chiefs with the Q Innovation in Sound award.
It didn't unnerve the football star at all as he is used to getting grief from thousands of football supporters every week. A few catty remarks from a small crowd didn't upset him.
A self-confessed Smiths fan, Barton offered his wisdom on the matter of getting one of the biggest bands back together again: "They told me they had turned down £40million for a reunion — but I reckon Marr is up for it."
With The Stone Roses confirming they were back together again as a music outfit after years of saying that would never be the case, all eyes and ears are on high alert about a possible Smiths reformation.
