Joe Satriani: Jimi Hendrix inspired me to pick up the guitar
Joe Satriani has explained that listening to Jimi Hendrix play the electric guitar changed the course of his life.
The musician said that he started out as a drummer, a skill inspired by watching The Beatles and the Rolling Stones on The Ed Sullivan Show.
But Satriani explained he was moved to make the switch to the guitar after hearing what Hendrix could do with the musical instrument.
"What made him great was his choice of notes," he told Guitar World.
"When you hear Machine Gun from Live at the Fillmore, you have no idea what's going to happen in the next few minutes."
Santriani added that as a guitar player himself, he feels a responsibility to acknowledge the influence of musical greats like Hendrix, while also making sure his own style is unique.
Last month, Satriani was part of the Experience Hendrix tour that visited cities across the US.
Other acts involved in the tribute shows included Los Lobos, Eric Johnson and Aerosmith's Brad Whitford.
