Jimi Hendrix's guitar skills 'down to ambidextrousness'
Posted on 27 Feb 2010 09:00 to category : Instruments News

The legendary electric guitar playing abilities of Jimi Hendrix can be partially attributed to the fact he was ambidextrous, it has been suggested.
According to a new paper from Stephen Christman, a psychologist from the University of Toledo, while Hendrix played the electric guitar left-handed, he used his right for eating, writing and taking phone calls.
Christman suggests this meant Hendrix could be a more able musician, reports the Guardian.
He cited the example of his work on the electric guitar on Still Dreaming where Hendrix uses "his right hand to play an intricate series of bends and slides, while his left hand uses the pickup selector to switch back and forth between the treble and basspickups".
It was added that the gift may have helped him with songwriting, as language and rhythm is processed on the left side of the brain and melody and harmony on the right something Christman suggested may be easier to combine in the minds of ambidextrous people.
Last year, Hendrix was named as the greatest electric guitar player in history by Time magazine.
