A mosaic of Jimi Hendrix's face created with more than 5,000 Fender plectrums has raised £23,000 for charity.

The work, which was created by British artist Ed Chapman, had been expected to attract a winning bid of around £16,000 when it was auctioned off during Cancer Research UK's Sound and Vision event at the Abbey Road studios last week, reports Fender's official blog FrontRow.

Chapman said he had wanted to create a unique tribute to Hendrix with the artwork.

"Jimi Hendrix is a guitar maestro and nobody played a Fender guitar like him," he explained.

"I decided to use plectrums to create a portrait of him because I like experimenting with different materials and textures and I think it is a fitting tribute to the musician."

The auction was carried out by comedian Al Murray, who also acted as the MC for the event, while Tom Jones, The Feeling and Eve Selis all put in appearances in support of the charitable efforts.

Cancer Research UK is also involved with the Busking Cancer initiative, which encourages musicians to get out their guitars and perform on the streets to raise money for the organisation.
