Jay-Z: Watch The Throne is more than just about music
Watch the Throne is more than just another hip hop album; it is about sustaining and protecting the culture behind this very particular type of music, according to one of the artists behind it.
Rap legend Jay-Z, who along with Kanye West, has produced one of the most talked about hip hop albums in years, said they had sought to create a sound that was distinct to other music genres and one that lay true to the history of rap music.
Speaking to Lorenzo Thomas on the hit radio station 99 Jamz, the rapper explained how just as hip hop replaced rock and roll as youth music, the same could happen to hip hop today.
"It can be replaced by other forms of music," he said. "So we making sure that we put the effort into making the best product so we can contend with all this other music, with all the dance music that’s dominating the charts right now and indie music that’s dominating the festivals."
With both R&B and hip hop experiencing a dance-influenced phase, many expected Jay-Z and West to follow suit.
However, ever the vanguards of hip hop, they've decided to keep true to their roots.
"No super over-the-top, big singing chorus or anything. The return of the boom-bap."
Watch The Throne was held off the number UK album top spot this week as Amy Winehouse's Back To Black continues to dominate the chart following her death.
