Japanese piano tuner in reflective mood
Toyofumi Kawamata, 69, told the Daily Yomiuri that he felt privileged to have been able to get his hands on some of the most prestigious pianos in the world.
A much sought after piano tuner, his ability to hammer keys into shape on one of the most popular instruments in the classical industry has not gone unnoticed.
He has worked with luminaries including Kazume Shimizu, Kei Ito, Akira Wakabayashi, Krystian Zimerman and Claudio Arrau.
"Somehow I have to meet the demands of my clients, the pianists. That's how I got hooked on this art. Every day brings a new challenge," he told the news provider.
Mr Kawamata started his career as a piano tuner when he was 18, fresh out of high school.
"Like doctors who try to find out what's making their patients sick, piano tuners try to learn from the pianists what they need to do."
A new book celebrating the history of the piano has been released.
Entitled A Natural History of the Piano, it was produced by respected pianist Stuart Isacoff.
