James Dillon, an avant-garde composer known for his inventive use of music instruments in his music, won his fourth prize at the Royal Philharmonic Society (RPS) Awards on Tuesday, making him the biggest winner in the history of the awards.

Dillon, who is part of the New Complexity School, was presented with his fourth award in total for his choral and electronic piece Nine Rivers, a 200-minute long orchestral composition that took him some 20 years to make.

The Scottish composer, who first performed the massive piece in its entirety last year in Glasgow, has produced major works including l'evolution du vol and the opera Philomela.

Other notable achievements at the prestigious ceremony included America piano player Leon Fleisher winning in the instrumentalist category. His work is all the more impressive given that he has struggled most of his professional life with the use of his right hand.

The Royal Philharmonic Society, which was formed in 1813, was created with the aim "to promote the performance, in the most perfect manner possible of the best and most approved instrumental music".
