Jail Guitar Doors project to include new prison
Billy Bragg's Jail Guitar Doors project is adding another prison to its roster of clients.
The charity scheme aims to rehabilitate criminals by encouraging them to pick up musical instruments and Armley Jail in Leeds is to become the 23rd institution in the UK to benefit from the programme, which has been running since 2007.
Bragg told BBC News that the scheme is part of making prison a more valuable place to society by encouraging inmates to change their lives.
"We want people to be able to move on from their situation and reconnect with the outside world, and my hunch was that playing an instrument - particularly a guitar - could help that," the singer-songwriter said.
The initiative is named after a B-side from The Clash and Bragg initially formed the charity as a way of marking the fifth anniversary of the death of Joe Strummer in a positive manner.
