In-orchestra directing 'more natural' says Joshua Bell

Joshua Bell has been talking to the Telegraph about the difference between conducting and directing a piece of music while also playing in an orchestra.

"It is bound to become more natural and organic when you cut out the middleman," the violin player told the paper. "A conductor can do wild things which can feel forced, but if you're directing from within the orchestra, you can't do that, things have to feel natural.”

Speaking of his role as the Academy of St Martin in the Fields (ASMF) musical director, he says: "When I was a kid I used to listen to classical music on the local Public Service Radio in Indiana, and it seemed like every third record was by the Academy."

Bell was four years old when he was given a violin and has more than 36 musical releases to his name, according to a profile on ASMF Orchestra website.

He tells the Telegraph that his forthcoming plans with the ASMF include getting composers to create fresh music for them to play regularly, as well as debuting an Edgar Meyer string piece.
