Iggy Pop to reform The Stooges

Iggy Pop has confirmed that he is getting back with his old band The Stooges.

Iggy Pop has revealed that he is to perform with The Stooges again, just months after the death of electric guitar player Ron Asheton.

The 62-year-old vocalist was a founder member of the band before he left to enjoy a successful solo career with hits such as Real Wild Child and The Passenger.

However, Pop has told BBC 6 Music that he is planning to rejoin his former bandmates for a one-off show in Brazil later this year.

James Williamson, who played in The Stooges between 1971 and 1980, will replace Asheton on electric guitar at the gig.

The South American show will then be followed by a full tour in 2010.

Despite Asheton's absence, Pop insisted that the guitar player's spirit still remains with the surviving band members.

"He is still a presence within the group without being on the physical plain," Pop said.

The Stooges formed in the late 1960s and released three studio albums between 1969 and 1973, although a new album featuring Pop was issued in 2007.
