Iconic Artist Leonard Cohen Passes Away at Age 82
One of the most influential songwriters of the last century has been confirmed dead today. Leonard Cohen was a leading light in the singer songwriter movement, inspiring artists as acclaimed as Bob Dylan, James Taylor and many others.
Cohen's record label Sony Music Canada confirmed the news via Facebook stating:
"It is with profound sorrow we report that the legendary poet, songwriter and artist, Leonard Cohen has passed away. We have lost one of music's most revered and prolific visionaries. A memorial will take place in Los Angeles at a later date. The family request privacy during their time of grief."
With his songs recorded and covered by more than any other artist across any genre, Cohen's significance upon the music industry cannot be understated. The list of those who have covered his music is indeed a star studded one, with the likes of Johnny Cash, Neil Diamond, Nina Simone and The Pixies all attributed with putting their own unique twist on the late musicians work.
His most acknowledged song, 'Hallelujah' was made famous by Jeff Buckley and has become a staple song within popular culture ever since.
Cohen's manager Robert Kory told USA Today: "Unmatched in his creativity, insight and crippling candor, Leonard Cohen was a true visionary whose voice will be sorely missed. I was blessed to call him a friend, and for me to serve that bold artistic spirit first hand, was a privilege and a great gift."
At this point in time the cause of death has not been specified.
