Hollywood actress masters tough piano piece in 12 weeks

Saoirse Ronan from Ireland worked hard to get a grip of Beethoven's piano sonata.
Saoirse Ronan learns piano piece in 12 weeks
Fast-rising teenage Hollywood star Saoirse Ronan gave her director a shock when she learnt how to play a complicated piece on the piano in just 12 weeks.

Ronan, 17, who first caught the attention of Hollywood's movers and shakers with her performance in Atonement, told the Irish Independent that she was serious about acting and wanted her performance to reflect reality.

In the movie her character plays a difficult Beethoven sonata. She would spend two hours a day perfecting the piece.

"There's this scene in the film where my vampire characters sit down to play an old piano and entrances everyone with her playing," she said.

"My vampire Eleanor is 200 years old in the film and had been playing piano that long, so there was a bit of pressure but I wanted it to look real."

Ronan, who has starred in films like The Lovely Bones and Hanna, could be a natural in front of the piano.

The Beethoven piece is said to be one of the hardest to learn and requires musicians to cross over their hands during a performance.

In other news, Sharon Corr from Irish band The Corrs, has sold her bespoke violin for £1,600 to raise money for charity.
