Hollywood Studios Sued for Frequently Reusing Film Soundtracks
The American Federation of Musicians have filed the complaint stating that “all music sound tracks already recorded…will not be used at any time for any purpose whatsoever except to accompany the picture for which the music sound track was originally prepared.
Sony’s Columbia Pictures, Viacom’s Paramount Pictures, Twentieth Century Fox, Walt Disney and Warner Bros are all defendants in the lawsuit.
Films alleged to have re-used original sounds include Titanic – suggesting that 1 minute and 10 seconds of music was originally used in This Means War and 18 seconds of music from Jaws is also allegedly used in Little Fockers (2010).
Law suits aside, one person who is maintaining originality with film scores / soundtracks is Nine Inch Nails’ Trent Reznor. His works on the film The Social Network picked up nine major awards, including the 2010 Golden Globe Award for Best original score and the Academy Award for best original score at the 83rd academy awards.
He has also worked on other successful films recently including the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and Gone Girl. And also writes and produces music for another side project called How to Destroy Angels.
