Paul is a guitar legend
Historic electric guitars from the personal collection of the legendary guitar pioneer Les Paul are to be sold at auction.

The collection, which also includes a piano and recording machines, will go under the hammer at Julien's Auctions in Beverly Hills, California, in June.

Paul, known as the father of the electric guitar, died in 2009 at the age of 94. The auction, between June 8th and 9th, takes place on what would have been his 97th birthday.

Highlights of the vintage electric guitar collection include a 1968 Prototype Gibson Les Paul Custom Recording Model, with an estimate of $60,000 - $80,000 (£37,000 - £50,000), and a 1951 Fender Nocaster ($40,000-$60,000) that was personally gifted to Les Paul by Leo Fender.

Paul, who started to play the guitar aged nine, developed one of the first solid-body electric guitars, released commercially in 1952 as the Gibson Les Paul.

He also developed the technology behind modern-day sound recording, pioneering sound-on-sound recording techniques and commissioning the first eight-track tape recorder.

Proceeds from the sale will benefit the Les Paul Foundation.
