Hip hop pioneer Sylvia Robinson has died
Robinson, who was a successful singer, songwriter and record producer in her own right, was especially famous for bringing together Sugar Hill Gang and producing their phenomenal hit record Rapper's Delight.
That single, which was released in 1979, is generally viewed as the first hip hop song to break into the charts.
Dan Charnas, author of The Big Payback: The History of the Business of Hip Hop, was quoted in the New York Times as saying: "Back in the days when you couldn’t find females behind the mixing board, Sylvia was there.
“It was Sylvia’s genius that made ‘Rapper’s Delight’ a hit."
She began her own career back in the 1950s as one half of the duo Mickey and Sylvia.
As a solo artist Robinson is best known for Pillow Talk, which was released in 1973.
She was also instrumental in producing another early classic hip hop track – the Message by Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five.
