Harrow Council commemorates Townshend's guitar smashing
Posted on 14 Dec 2009 16:00 to category : Instruments News

The location where Pete Townshend first smashed an electric guitar on stage has been hailed as a rock landmark by a local authority.
According to Harrow Council, The Who's habit of smashing guitars during their gigs began in a pub called the Railway Hotel in 1964.
Although the hostelry no longer exists, it is now home to a housing block called, appropriately enough, Daltrey House.
Harrow Council has therefore chosen to mark its significance by unveiling a plaque at the site.
Councillor Barry Macleod-Cullinane, head of housing at the authority, told the Harrow Times: "It seemed to us only right that music fans on pilgrimages around London can see another landmark associated with a true great of rock music."
He added that it is "amazing" to think that The Who's trademark of smashing electric guitars began in a pub in Harrow.
The Who rose to prominence with hits such as I Can't Explain and My Generation and continue to tour today, despite the deaths of band members Keith Moon and John Entwistle.
