Harper recommends 'mid-level amplification' for effects

Grammy Award winner Ben Harper has warned against turning amps all the way up to 11 when playing guitar music that is heavy on effects.

br /> The American musician told Ted Drozdowski of the Gibson website that he generally turns the amp down to a mid-level and brings the volume pedal up to "full throttle" when playing heavier music on his acoustic guitar in order to keep the sound "defined".

"You can't go high volume, because the minute you go over the edge you lose definition," he explained.

Among the effects that Harper uses are wah, flanger and tube compression and if he needs to go any louder he likes to "kick in a vintage Ibanez TS-808 tube screamer".

The singer-songwriter also gave some tips on recording acoustic guitars, advising that an ideal set-up will feature one microphone at the neck and one at the sound hole.

Harper is set to embark on a tour of the US at the end of this month and is scheduled to play London on June 27th.
