Guitars used by Buddy Holly and Johnny Cash to be sold
Posted on 26th Nov 2009 13:13 to category Instruments News
Country fans will soon have the chance to buy some of the most famous guitars in musical history - providing they have a big enough bank balance.
Auction house Christie's has organised a country music sale in New York on December 3rd 2009, which will see musical instruments used by some of the genre's biggest names go under the hammer.
Among the items listed in the catalogue are Johnny Cash's black Fender Malibu, a Gibson J-2000 owned by Hank Thompson and a Fenderelectric guitar used by Waylon Jennings.
Those three items are expected to fetch between $40,000 and $120,000 each, but Christie's anticipates another guitar attracting a much bigger price.
A Gibson J-45 regularly used on stage by Buddy Holly has a catalogue estimate of $450,000 - $550,000.
Other lots in the sale include stage outfits worn by Cash and Roy Rogers, together with hand-written lyrics by Hank Williams and Conway Twitty.
Many of the items in the sale come from the estate of Thompson, the Texan country music legend who died in November 2007, just days after announcing his retirement.
