Guitar music 'can maintain popularity'
Music made on electric guitars remains popular despite this genre not selling as many singles as in the past.
This is the view of Independent columnist Nick Hasted, who explained that the death of rock 'n' roll has been predicted many times in the past and said the latest efforts to write it off are wide of the mark.
He noted that changes to the rules about what could feature in singles charts were altered in 2006, allowing for cheap digital downloads and making the rundowns an "almost teen-only zone".
Mr Hasted said youngsters of this age tend to prefer pop, dance and R&B, while the growing popularity of grime and dubstep has led to electric guitar music being pushed out of the charts.
However, he noted that album sales generally remain strong for the genre.
"The commercial health of guitar music in the album charts - and with concert juggernauts such as U2 - suggests a shift away from teenage tastes, at least in the medium term," the commentator explained.
Last month, electric guitar bands such as Metallica and AC/DC were named in the list of the top ten highest-grossing live acts of 2010 by concert trade publication Pollstar.
