Guitar company investing in DNA tags for its music instruments
Posted on 27 Jul 2011 11:55 to category : Instruments News

A guitar company is investing in embedding security directly into its music instruments in a bid to prevent illegal counterfeiting.
CF Martin & Co, which is based in Nazareth, Pennsylvania, has been working with the company Applied DNA Sciences to develop a security tag that cannot be copied.
Sounding like something out of a science fiction movie, the technology allows manufacturers like CF Martin & Co to mark their electric guitars and acoustic guitars – and most other music instruments – with a "unique trace of plant DNA".
Chris Martin, chairman and chief executive officer of Martin Guitar, said in a statement: "Protecting our intellectual property is of vital importance, as we face new counterfeit-related challenges at home and abroad."
It is extremely hi-tech stuff. The same technology is used, for example, on microchip components that go into weapons systems.
Authentic handmade guitars are extremely expensive because of the time and effort that goes into making these bespoke instruments.
CF Martin & Co was established in 1833 and is the largest producer of acoustic guitars in the US.
