Government to revise music licensing laws

Performing musicians may be in line to benefit from a relaxation of music licensing laws.

Electric guitar players, bassists and drummers could be set to benefit from changes in music licensing laws.

The government has confirmed it is considering revising the rules to allow performances for 100 people or less to be staged without the venue applying for a licence.

This development has been hailed by the British Beer and Pub Association, which said it supports any measures that can help pubs overcome existing barriers to staging live music.

Martin Rawlings, a director at the group, said relaxing the rules will also help aspiring and established musicians to reach a wider audience.

Licensing minister Gerry Sutcliffe added: "Going to see a band, musician or singer is a very important part of many people's lives.

"We're keen to do what we can to support audiences and musicians."

However, a recent poll of council licensing officers by the Local Government Association found that nine in ten are opposed to easing existing restrictions on live music.
