Government steps in to ensure Abbey Road's future
The future of Abbey Road Studios as a recording studio has been assured following a government commitment to list the building as a historically-important site.
Electric guitar player Sir Paul McCartney and composer Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber have been some of the high-profile voices calling for the studios to be saved in recent weeks following rumours that owner EMI was planning to sell the facility.
Although the record company has since confirmed it are not getting rid of the site, the government has stepped in to ensure the Abbey Road Studios are protected.
Culture minister Margaret Hodge said the studios have an unforgettable history with famous tracks from all genres of music recorded there.
"My favourite song of all time, If I Fell by The Beatles, was recorded there in 1964 and to have played a part in preserving this world-famous venue is as exciting for me as hearing that song for the first time," she said.
The Beatles recorded most of their music in the venue and named their final studio album after the site.Posted on 24 Feb 2010 09:01 to category : Music News
