Gibson names Traveling Wilburys best rock supergroup
Posted on 8th Dec 2009 18:00 to category Band / Celebrity News
Electric guitar manufacturer Gibson has named The Traveling Wilburys as the best classic rock supergroup.
In the late 1980s, former Beatle George Harrison banded together with Tom Petty, Jeff Lynne, Roy Orbison and Bob Dylan to record an album.
Gibson noted that the collaboration was originally meant to be confined to one song called Handle With Care.
However, the "musical giants" decided to keep recording until they had an album's worth of material.
Gibson described their debut LP Volume 1 as "flawless" and commended it for showcasing the talents of each individual band member.
The electric guitar firm added that the record was "teeming with perfectly crafted pop singles" and sold extremely well.
Although Orbison died shortly after recording Volume 1, the remaining members of the group did go on to record a second album.
Harrison's death in 2001 suggests that no further Wilburys material will be recorded, although Petty and Lynne did perform Handle With Care at a tribute concert to the late Beatle in 2002.
