Gibson hails blues slide guitarists
Posted on 27th Jul 2009 14:00 to category Instruments News
Electric guitar manufacturer Gibson has commended the slide technique of some of the world's most influential blues musicians.
Robert Johnson, for instance, was said to have played a "key role" in helping this style of playing become widely popular.
Gibson also hailed the work of Muddy Waters, describing him as an innovator who influenced later musicians such as Eric Clapton of Cream.
"Only a handful of guitarists can recreate Muddy's distinctive, unhurried, whinnying slide tone," it commented.
Gibson added that Elmore James also deserves credit for his bottleneck skills.
His open-E tuning on classics such as Dust My Broom was singled out for particular praise, partly because he used an acoustic guitar that was amplified by a "crudely attached" pick-up.
Using a bottleneck also became a distinctive trademark for many other electric guitar players in later years.
For example, slide bars helped create the signature sound of major figures such as Rory Gallagher and late Beatle George Harrison.
