Gibson chief warns about the 'extinction' of first-rate electric guitars

Henry Juszkiewicz, chief executive of Gibson, has revealed that there is a shortage of the types of wood used to manufacture preeminent electric guitars.

The head of Gibson has warned that the state of electric guitar manufacturing could reach a tipping point because of a shortage of wood.

Henry Juszkiewicz, the chief executive of Gibson, revealed in an interview with the Independent that the rare and exotic woods used to create these legendary music instruments used by stars across the world are running out at an astonishing rate.

He wisecracked that high-quality guitars could become an "endangered species".

Mr Juszkiewicz told the newspaper: "The true wood guitar is disappearing quickly. We need to act now because it just won't be around in ten years."

The types of wood that he is referring to include maple, ebony, mahogany, spruce and rosewood, which, because of over-harvesting and the reckless exploitation of natural rainforests, is becoming increasingly scarce.

His point about the possible extinction of quality guitars is a serious one as different types of wood create different types of sounds.

For example, rosewood guitars have a metallic and bright sound, whereas mahogany guitars are richer in sound and more wood-like".
