Gibson Les Paul Deluxe Goldtop electric guitar sells at auction
Not only is it a fine music instrument, but it is noted as being the electric guitar that was used by Townshend during the band's famous Quadrophenia tour in 1973 and 1974.
In a letter that accompanied the guitar, Townshend explained that he had bought the music instrument from Bob Heil.
He said that this guitar was very distinct as the Goldtop look distinguished it from other cherry-coloured Les Pauls of the time.
Known for numbering his guitars, he wrote: "This was my number five stage guitar on that tour and must be one of my earliest Les Pauls. It's unmodified, apart from the machine heads, which were replaced with Grovers."
The Christie's auction in London also saw the sale of a Double Fantasy album that was signed by The Beatles star John Lennon hours before he was shot dead outside his home. It went for £23,750.
Another exceptional item was a Dee Dee Ramone bass guitar. It was originally given to a fan at a gig at The Venue in London. It sold for £10,000.
Quadrophenia was the sixth studio album by The Who. It was released in 1973 and was known for being the band's second foray into rock opera.
