Gibson Explorer 'one of James Hetfield's favourite guitars'
Metallica frontman James Hetfield has frequently been seen playing a Gibson Explorer over the course of his career.
Gibson Lifestyle blog columnist Peter Hodgson explained the star can be considered as one of the "masters" of the instrument.
"Hetfield has played many different guitars throughout his career, but the Gibson Explorer has popped up at numerous times, including the 'So What' guitar - so named after stickers placed on the body," the writer said.
The Metallica singer also has another Gibson Explorer model named Rusty, which featured in the band's video for single St Anger.
This 1976 guitar has been refinished in black and features a tarnished metal pickguard.
Hetfield is far from the only prominent musician to make use of an Explorer.
Others to have played the model include Eric Clapton, The Edge and Dave Grohl.
Hetfield and his arsenal of guitars are set to travel the world with Metallica this year as the long-running band head out on tour once again.
Over the course of 2011, they will play shows in Germany, Sweden, Italy, France and Brazil.
Metallica will also be appearing at the Sonisphere Festival at Knebworth House in July.
