GCSE Music To Include DJ'ing In Course Revamp

When you think of GCSE music you think classical arrangements, violins, pianos, woodwind and brass but all that could be re-defined as exam board AQA are considering throwing DJ'ing into the mix.

Spinning and scratching and hip-hop scratching will be a number of technical skills that need to be learned in order to reach A* levels of success. If given the go ahead, DJ’ing will become part of the curriculum by September 2016.

Students, however, will still be able to sing or perform on traditional instruments as usual but whilst this could prove to be a tricky move for those who are classically taught, the changes are thought to be bringing music education up to speed given the emergence and popularity of DJ’ing.

Songs from The Beatles Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Heart Club Band are also being considered in the proposed changes.

AQA’s GCSE music course comprises of three sections: composing, understanding and performing music.
