Future of guitar music uncertain
Jim Chancellor, managing director at Fiction Records, told Radio 1 that a lot of his contemporaries were unwilling to take on guitar-based bands, regardless of how good the music is, because "there is little chance in it succeeding",
The way the music industry has evolved post-digital revolution has meant that it is harder than ever before for record labels to make money in the conventional way – through selling actual songs.
Mr Chancellor believes that guitar music needs a so-called "shot in the arm" to create the changes that are needed for musicians who specialise in this genre.
"The problem is everyone is looking for instant results from a new signing," he said.
"What we've tried to do at Fiction is help bands through those phases. We try and nurture talent.
It means that rock and indie bands are failing to make a dent on the singles and albums charts.
The BBC's Newsbeat worked out that only one debut album from a guitar-based band made it into the top 35 best sellers of 2011.
