French youngsters learn to play musical instruments
Children from disadvantaged backgrounds living in Paris have been given the chance to learn to play a musical instrument.
Youngsters aged between seven and 12 years old have been taking part in the Demos Orchestra scheme, which seeks to promote racial harmony in the French capital, the Independent reported.
The young people taking part in the scheme have learned to play musical instruments ranging from violins to trumpets and cellos, practising pieces such as Tchaikovsky's Russian Dance from The Nutcracker for four hours each week.
At the end of the project the 450 children from a variety of ethnic backgrounds will play together at the Pleyel Hall in the centre of Paris, where other acts including the London Symphony Orchestra and violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter will perform this year.
Recently, youngsters in the UK were found to be playing the guitar and keyboard in greater numbers thanks to the influences of the genres of music that are currently popular in the charts, according to Professor Sue Hallam and Dr Andrea Creech of the University of London.Posted on 19 Jul 2010 18:30 to category : Instruments News
