Florence Welch close to 'sabotage'

Florence and the Machine singer Florence Welch admits she wanted to ''sabotage'' her career when she split up from her boyfriend.

Florence Welch almost "sabotaged" her career when she broke up with her boyfriend.

The singer - who fronts BRIT award-winning band Florence and the Machine - wrote her debut album 'Lungs' after splitting up with a long-term lover Stuart, but almost gave up on her LP because she was so heartbroken.

She explained: "About 18 months ago I was in a seriously bad way. I'd broken up with Stuart, I felt out of control and I was very raw and not in a good frame of mind. I'd gone from being this art student messing about with music to this girl with a record deal, magazine front covers and all this hype. In many ways, it was everything I ever wanted, but when it happened all I felt was total, paralysing fear. I couldn't cope with the idea of making the album. I just wanted to sabotage the whole thing, not do it and just disappear."

The 22-year-old singer eventually learned to use music as a way to help ease her depression.

She told Grazia magazine: "I came back to London for an appointment in the studio. When I started singing, all the bad feelings started to fall away and I realised this was what I needed. I got through that depression, that heartbreak and so many other things with the album, which is why it's so emotional. It's possibly why so many people connect with it."

While Florence is happier in herself and with her career, she is still prone to having "meltdowns" and finds herself easily "overwhelmed" with certain situations.

She added: "I've had times when I've just turned up in a hotel in Stockholm and gone into a meltdown. Crying and feeling lonely. My dad is fantastically good at calming me down and making me see straight. I think it's just a feeling of being overwhelmed. I guess there's a big part of me that never actually thought any of this would happen and it has, and it's happened so fast and it's wonderful, but the changes can be scary."
