Famous Motown piano returns home to Detroit
The 1877 Steinway piano has been restored to its former glory and Sir Paul McCartney has been instrumental in making these plans come to fruition after he discovered that it was unplayable during a visit to the US city in 2011.
Sir Paul is a self-confessed Motown fan and recorded a series of covers with The Beatles and offered to pay costs to bring the piano, which was originally in the record label's Studio B, back into use.
To celebrate the finished article, Sir Paul and Berry Gordy, founder of Motown, played it together at a charity event in New York in September.
It has now returned to Detroit where it will take pride of place in the museum situated in the label's studio.
Robin Terry from the Motown Historical Museum told the Associated Press: "We're happy to see our baby come home. This piano is part of our treasured collection of historical artefacts that tell the Motown story."
The Motown genre came to prominence through the iconic records of the likes of Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder and Edwin Starr.
