The Federation of Music Services (FMS) has urged councils to ensure that young people are still given access to musical instruments and lessons at school.

It has conducted a survey which found 47 per cent of music services using local authority funding expect to see their budgets cut, with a further 18.5 per cent believing all of their financial assistance will be ended.

FMS chief executive Virginia Haworth-Galt said the government has already expressed its support for musical education and urged councils to hold off on budget decisions until the Henley Review reports its findings into the funding and delivery of the service.

"Music and our children's education are too important to be jettisoned like this, particularly when we know that 91 per cent of the public back music education in schools," she stated.

The aim of the Henley Review is to examine how students can receive more access to musical instruments inside and outside of school, as well as looking into allocating funds in a more effective manner.
