Every child 'has the right to learn a musical instrument'

Schoolchildren should continue to be encouraged to play instruments such as guitars and keyboards, a teaching union has stated.
According to the Educational Institute of Scotland (EIS), many local authorities across the country are struggling to balance their budgets.
However, the group said this does not mean schools should cut back on providing musical education, as this can aid the personal and social development of children.
"Every child should have the right to learn a music instrument," said Ronnie Smith, general secretary of the EIS. "Learning to make music provides them with skills that will be applicable to many other areas of their everyday lives."
Mr Smith noted that learning to play a musical instrument can help children learn how to work both as an individual and as part of a larger group.
This, he stated, could boost their social skills, self-confidence and overall personal development.
According to figures from Halifax, 9.7 million people in the UK actively play instruments such as guitars and keyboards.
