Europe singer praises keyboard sound on The Final Countdown
Speaking to BBC News, he revealed that he first wrote the riff when he was at college and hung on to it for several years before completing the song.
Tempest said that by the mid-80s, many rock bands such as Van Halen were experimenting with keyboards.
Tempest commented: "We had 11 or 12 synthesisers midied together to create that sound.
"We got it really good in the end."
He went on to describe the track as a "magic song", adding that he particularly enjoys performing it on stage.
"We play it live a lot," he stated.
