Legendary electric guitar player Eric Clapton is to sell off part of his personal guitar collection in aid of his own rehabilitation charity, the Crossroads Centre.

Clapton will be sending 70 electric guitars and 70 guitar amps to auction at an equipment sale at Bonhams, New York, in February next year.

The auction is to include musical instruments from the likes of Fender and Gibson among others, as well as instruments donated by Joe Bonamassa and Jeff Beck.

Highlights of the sale include Clapton's main instrument from his Cream reunion shows in 2005, a custom-built black, signature Fender Stratocaster which is estimated to fetch more than $13,000.

"We are delighted to be offering such a fantastic collection of guitars and amps from such an iconic musician" said Stephanie Connell, Head of Entertainment Memorabilia at Bonhams.

Back in 2004, Clapton's beloved Fender Strat which he nicknamed "Blackie" sold for over $520,000 when it sold at Christies in New York.

Clapton's Crossroads Centre offers help to those affected by drugs and alcohol abuse.

A spokesman for the centre says, "The Crossroads Centre is very excited to be the beneficiary of Eric Clapton's guitar and amp auction at Bonhams which will directly assist those who are in need of addiction treatment."

Located on the Caribbean island of Antigua, Clapton founded the non-profit centre in 1998.
