Eric Clapton guitar auction raises £1.3m
An auction of Eric Clapton's personal guitar collection has raised $2.15 million (£1.3 million) for the drug and rehabilitation centre he founded in Antigua.
A total of 75 guitar and 55 amps made up the lots at the event held in Bonhams New York.
The top-selling items included a 1948 Gibson L-5P, which raised $82,960 - far above the $20,000 to $30,000 predicted prior to the sale.
Meanwhile, a pair of 1997 Fender Twin Amps also raised more than its expected $9,000 to $12,000, fetching $42,700 for The Crossroads Centre.
Jon Baddeley, worldwide head of collectables at Bonhams, said it had been a "privilege and an honour" to be involved with the sale.
"Arguably the greatest guitarist of all time, Eric Clapton inspires an ever-expanding fan base, many of whom made the journey to Bonhams in New York over the past few days and joined us for this remarkable auction," he stated.
The event lasted for more than four hours, with collectors from Russia, Asia, the UK and Japan entering the bidding.
Clapton is to perform in the UK during May, appearing in Glasgow and Cardiff before taking part in a run of dates at the Royal Albert Hall in London.
