Elton John defies protestors for Morocco gig
Posted on 18 May 2010 16:30 to category : Music News

Sir Elton John is to headline a music festival in Morocco, despite protests from Islamic political parties.
The openly gay musician has agreed to top the bill at the Mawazine World Rhythms Festival - which takes place from May 21 in the North African country's capital, Rabat - provoking fury among Muslim groups who insist he should not allowed to enter the country because of his sexuality.
Mustapha Ramid, from the opposition party Islamist PJD, said: "Morocco is an Islamic state where stages should not used to allow a person with such a degree of debauchery to perform, because we have to shield the young from such influences."
Despite the uproar Elton's proposed appearance has caused, festival organiser Aziz Daki is adamant the 'Rocket Man' singer's private life is not an issue.
Aziz said: "Elton John is one of the best artists in the world. He is great and extraordinary when he appears on stage. That's why we invite him and welcome him to the Mawazine festival. The private life of a singer is not our business. We do not invite singers and artists after assessing their private lives."
