Elton John: Artists should write their own songs
According to the rock veteran, musicians who compose original material are less likely to find themselves "at the mercy of anyone".
However, he admitted that he finds modern pop music rather uninspiring.
"Songwriters today are pretty awful, which is why everything sounds the same," Sir Elton said.
Speaking to the Radio Times, he added that he is not a fan of TV talent shows such as The X Factor.
Indeed, he admitted that he "probably wouldn't have lasted" if he had appeared on a programme of this kind.
The 63-year-old musician first rose to prominence in the early 1970s with hits such as Your Song, Tiny Dancer, Rocket Man and Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting.
He has continued his success with smashes such as I'm Still Standing and a re-rerecording of Sorry Seems to Be the Hardest Word with boy band Blue.
