Electronic music instruments to be studied at new exhibition
The roots of electronic music instruments are to be explored as part of a new exhibition at the Science Museum in London.
Developed by Dr Katy Price of Anglia Ruskin University, the Oramics to Electronica: Revealing Histories of Electronic Music exhibition will feature a range of early instruments as well as footage of them being used.
Visitors can even have a go on an interactive version of an Oramics machine.
The life of Daphne Oram, the woman who designed the Oramics machine, an early form of composition machine which dated back to 1957, will also be detailed at the exhibition and Dr Price promises it is as fascinating as the machine itself.
"Daphne was a key figure in setting up the BBC's famous Radiophonic Workshop, but left to pursue her own creative work. While Delia Derbyshire is well known for helping to produce the iconic Dr Who theme tune, Daphne is a largely forgotten figure in the world of electronic music," stated Dr Price.
“Even her machine was forgotten about. It was actually found a few years ago in a barn in France and has only recently been restored.”
The exhibition will run until December 1st 2012 and is free to view.
