Electric guitar fretboards 'should be cleaned once or twice a year'

Electric guitar players have been advised on how to take care of their musical instrument.

Musicians who want to keep their electric guitar looking good even after frequent use have been advised it is important to have a regular cleaning schedule for the instrument.

Ellen Barnes, a columnist for the Gibson Lifestyle blog, explained that the task of cleaning a fretboard needs to take place "once or twice a year".

She said conducting this work any more regularly can damage the natural moisture it picks up from the oils in a player's fingers.

"Begin cleaning your fretboard with a soft, damp cloth (an old T-shirt or sock will work) that you have wrung out as much as you possibly can; you don't want to see any drops of water on your fretboard," Ms Barnes told electric guitar players.

She added the cloth should be worked down the fretboard, with the area making contact with it being altered regularly so the musician is not just transferring dirt from one section to another.

The expert pointed out that when "significant grime" has built up, it may be necessary to conduct some very light brushing using steel wool.

Last week, her fellow Gibson columnist Ted Drozdowski said electric guitarists should look to build up a well-ordered pedal-board.
