Eddie Van Halen's special Fender given to museum
A specially-designed Fender electric guitar played by Eddie Van Halen is to go on display at the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History.
In the mid-1970s, Van Halen realised there was no guitar on the market that catered to his specific needs and desire to create a signature sound.
He went on to construct the 'Frankenstein' model, combining a number of elements from long-established guitar designs into a single instrument, reports the official Fender blog FrontRow.
In 2006, after more than 30 years of service, the Frankenstein was retired and replaced with an exact replica created by Fender for Van Halen.
Known as the 'Frank 2', the electric guitar will now be housed in Division of Culture and the Arts at the National Museum.
Brent Glass, director of the institution, said: "The museum collects objects that are multidimensional and this guitar reflects innovation, talent and influence.
"The guitar moves the museum's instrument collections into more contemporary history."
Van Halen is best-known as the co-founder and lead guitarist in the band which bears his surname.
The rockers remain highly popular to this day, with more than one million fans signed up to their official Facebook page.
