Drum your way to fitness
Posted on 9 Jan 2012 14:30 to category : Instruments News

Drums Alive, which involves a large bouncy exercise ball – traditionally used in stabilisation exercises – and a pair of drum sticks, is based on the idea of using rhythm as a source of engendering fitness.
According to WTO-FM, a typical one-hour workout, which involves routines centred on thumping the exercise with the drum sticks in a number of aerobic and musical ways, can burn up to 400 calories.
Jennifer Dagati, the licensed US partner of the new fitness obsession, said the best thing about Drums Alive is that "everyone can do it no matter what age, fitness level or drum skill".
Drums Alive was developed by Carrie Ekins, after she suffered a "devastating hip injury".
As she was recovering, she decided that she would like to have some fun and began to drum on boxes – here she found she was feeling fit both in body and mind.
Ms Ekins then did some research, discovering that "drum patterns help to generate enhanced alpha waves...as well as enhance the healing of the body on many levels".
