Drive guitar amp 'to get best tone out of Les Paul'

Canada's JW Jones has provided some tips for guitarists looking to find the best possible tone with a Gibson Les Paul.

Electric guitar player JW Jones has claimed Gibson Les Paul owners should always be able to get a classic tone from their instrument, no matter what guitar amps they use.

Speaking to the Gibson website, the Canadian blues guitarist explained that the key is to "drive the amp as hard as possible" after plugging in a Les Paul.

Jones recommended adjusting the treble and mid-range controls on the amp, as well as playing around with the tone pot on the guitar, until the "sweet spot" is located.

"This approach is basic, but really effective," he told the website.

"I get the tone I want on the neck pickup first, because I use the neck pickup setting for a lot of my solos and rhythm guitar."

The Ottawa-based musician released his sixth album, Midnight Memphis Sun, in August this year.

Recorded at the famous Sun Studios in Memphis, the record features contributions from legendary bluesmen Hubert Sumlin and Charlie Musselwhite.
