Donovan handed Icon award
Posted on 7 Oct 2009 16:00 to category : Band / Celebrity News

Acoustic guitar player Donovan has been handed a prestigious honour at this year's BMI Music Awards.
The folk singer-songwriter, who made his name in the 1960s with hits such as Mellow Yellow and The Hurdy Gurdy Man, was given the BMI Icon award.
This puts him in exalted company, including Ray Davies of The Kinks, Bryan Ferry of Roxy Music and former Genesis frontman Peter Gabriel.
Donovan received the honour in acknowledgement of his "unique and indelible influence on generations of music makers".
Indeed, his songs have been covered by acts as diverse as Herman's Hermits, Joan Baez, Kate Bush and Deep Purple.
Both John Lennon and Paul McCartney have also cited Donovan as a musical influence, as he taught them the finger picking acoustic guitar style that inspired them to write songs such as Blackbird, Julia and Dear Prudence.
Donovan exchanged musical ideas with The Beatles when they were both on a meditation retreat in India in early 1968.
