A doctor is bringing music to a hospital as a way of making life better for patients.

A doctor with a passion for playing old American Civil War tunes on his trusty violin has been sharing his love of music with his staff and co-workers.

Dr Robert Corder, who works at Heartland Health, has decided to bring music into the hospital because he appreciates the power it has in the medical process, reported necn.com.

Although he appreciates it has no direct impact on bringing about physical changes, he understands music's ability to offer comfort and support in other ways.

"Music and the arts help lift the spirits, and that's a very important part of healing. All kinds of arts do that," he told the news provider.

It has been reported that music and art help to reduce the anxiety levels in patients and this is something that Heartland is looking to explore in the way it delivers its services.

The aim is to make the experience of being in hospital as comfortable as possible – music can help achieve this.

Stacey Park, a volunteer with experience in theatre, helped come up with the idea.

"I know how much theatre helped my life in so many ways," she said.

"I wanted to bring the arts to my community."

The British Association for Music Therapy has stated that music therapy is an established clinical discipline.
