Django Reinhardt named greatest acoustic guitar player
Django Reinhardt has been named as the greatest acoustic guitar player of all time.
For the past week, Gibson has been conducting a rundown of the 50 guitarists it considers to have been the best performers with the instrument, naming the likes of Bob Dylan, Neil Young and Nick Drake in its list.
It explained that it had chosen Reinhardt, who was one of the earliest European jazz musicians to become famous, as the winner partly because of the difficulties he had to overcome merely to play the acoustic guitar.
"Reinhardt's lifelong wizardry on the acoustic guitar was all the more amazing considering the horrific burns he received over much of his body, including his left 'fret' hand, when his home went up in flames," the instrument manufacturer's website explained.
Other musicians who managed to make it into the top ten included Chet Atkins, Robert Johnson, Bert Jansch and Richard Thompson.
