Disputes over authenticity of 'Titanic violin'

Historical societies in the UK and the US have questioned the authenticity of the instrument.

The authenticity of a violin thought to be that of Titanic band leader Wallace Hartley has sparked a fierce dispute between historians and collectors.

Auctioneer Henry Aldridge and Sons stated that the instrument had been with the musician when he died in the icy North Atlantic waters when the famous ship sank over 100 years ago but this has since been questioned.

The Titanic Historical Society in the US and the curator of a small museum in Colne, Lancashire, hometown of the musician, insist that Hartley was never found with his violin.

However, the auctioneer has refuted these claims, stating that it has proved "beyond reasonable doubt" that the violin was strapped to the band leader when he was found.

Nigel Hampson, curator of the Titanic in Lancashire Museum in Colne, said: "The inventory of items recovered on Hartley's body makes no mention whatsoever of a violin or music case."

The violin is thought to have a value in the six-figure region and is now due to go on display at Belfast City Hall next month.

The Titanic was known as the "unsinkable ship" when it set off for its voyage in 1912 from Southampton to New York, but collided with an iceberg and claimed the lives of 1,500 people.
