Digital Sales in UK pass £1 billion mark

Total digital music sales have now passed the £1 billion mark.

Digital music sales in the UK have passed the £1 billion mark, seven years after digital downloading officially launched.

The British Recorded Music Industry (BPI) announced that almost one-third of the total (£316.5 million) was spent in 2010 alone.

They also revealed that the recent album 21 by the ever-popular Adele has become the UK's biggest selling digital album of all time since it was released in January 2011. It is followed by Lady Gaga's Poker Face and Kings of Leon's Only By The Night

Geoff Taylor, BPI chief executive, said: “British music fans enjoy the world’s most competitive and innovative digital music scene, propelling all-time sales of digital singles and albums past the £1 billion mark. The strength of British music means there is fantastic potential for further growth."

Although the success of digital sales is welcomed by record companies as a positive sign that more and more people are beginning to purchase digital music legally, widespread illegal downloading is still a problem.

Only recently a woman was convicted of unlawfully downloading up to 30,000 music files.

The UK's single market is now made up almost exclusively of digital music, which accounts for 99 per cent of its sales.
